Mental Health
Mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorders rank among the leading causes of disability worldwide, underscoring the degree to which the global mental health crisis demands immediate attention. These conditions affect millions of individuals and place immense strain on healthcare systems and society at large. Despite the urgent need for more effective treatments, psychiatric drug development has stagnated, leaving patients with limited therapeutic options. Precision Psychiatry represents a promising paradigm shift in mental health care that aims to tailor psychiatric treatments to a homogeneous biologically defined subgroup integrating clinical symptoms with biomarkers signatures.
In the meantime, in Luxembourg, a key recent indicator from the Caisse Nationale de Santé underscores the magnitude of the problem in the working population. In 2024, depression became the leading cause of medically certified sickness absence among resident employees, accounting for about 17.3%of all days of illness with a medical certificate. The Luxembourg Research Clinic aims to support this vision by carrying out clinical research deep phenotyping of mental disorders in order to improve prevention and treatment.
