Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH)
The Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) is a public biomedical research organisation dedicated to advancing health through patient-centred translational research. As one of Luxembourg’s leading biomedical research institutions, the LIH brings together multidisciplinary expertise to better understand disease mechanisms and translate scientific discoveries into meaningful benefits for patients. Its research places a particular emphasis on precision health, with a strong focus on cancer and immune-related disorders. Through this bed-to-bench-to-bed approach, the LIH aims to ensure that research findings can ultimately improve patient care and health outcomes.
The research activities of the LIH are organised around three central departments: the Department of Cancer Research, the Department of Infection and Immunity, and the Department of Precision Health. Together, these departments comprise more than 200 scientists with expertise spanning cell and molecular biology, bioinformatics, statistics, clinical research and epidemiology. Their work covers areas including cancer, immunological and inflammatory disorders, neurodegenerative and metabolic diseases, digital health and preventive medicine.
A key strength of the LIH is its translational and interdisciplinary approach, connecting fundamental research with clinical application and public health. Researchers use advanced technologies including multiomics, artificial intelligence, real-world patient data, digital biomarkers and innovative exposure measurements to develop new approaches to diagnosis, prevention and treatment.
The LIH works closely with Luxembourg’s hospitals, the University of Luxembourg, as well as international research partners. As a key partner of the Luxembourg Research Clinic, the LIH contributes internationally recognised expertise in translational and mechanistic research, particularly in cancer and immune-mediated diseases, as well as in research in exposome sciences, population health, digital epidemiology, and personalised prevention, enabling a deeper understanding of the environmental, biological, and behavioural determinants of health and disease. Through its Department of Translational Medicine (TMOH), the LIH provides extensive clinical trial and biobanking expertise, while its Department of Medical Informatics (DMI) brings leading capabilities in health data sciences, digital health, artificial intelligence, and the integration of clinical and biomedical data. Together, these strengths play a central role in supporting the mission of the LRC to advance high-quality clinical and translational research for the benefit of patients in Luxembourg and beyond.
