Shared Governance
A core principle of the Luxembourg Research Clinic (LRC) is shared governance, ensuring that all partner institutions are equitably represented in the strategic and operational development of the initiative.
The governance structure is designed to support transparency, scientific excellence, and efficient decision-making, while fostering collaboration across institutions and disciplines.
The LRC governance framework is composed of three main bodies:
01 The Research Clinic Directorate
The Research Clinic Directorate is the Luxembourg Research Clinic (LRC)’s main decision-making body and is responsible for its strategic development and implementation. Led by the Research Clinic Director, the Directorate includes one representative from each partner institution acting as co-directors. Together, they oversee the scientific, operational, and financial direction of the LRC.
Key responsibilities of the Directorate include:
- Defining the strategic vision and priorities of the LRC
- Overseeing implementation of research and operational activities
- Determining budget allocation and resource distribution
- Supporting the development of clinical and translational research projects
- Guiding research priorities and identifying emerging areas of focus
02 Translational Steering Committee (TSC)
Reporting to the Research Clinic Directorate, the Translational Steering Committee evaluates clinical and translational research proposals according to objective criteria set by the Directorate and guides funding allocations. The Translational Steering Committee includes the Research Clinic Director, one representative from each partner institution, and an ad hoc panel of pre-established external experts for proposal evaluation.
By ensuring rigorous and transparent evaluation processes, the Translational Steering Committee contributes to maintaining high scientific quality and relevance across LRC-supported research activities.
03 Director of the Luxembourg Research Clinic
The Luxembourg Research Clinic is led by Prof. Dr Christof von Kalle. Prof. von Kalle brings extensive experience in translational oncology, gene therapy, and molecular medicine, as well as a strong track record in fostering collaboration between academic institutions, healthcare providers, and industry. Prior to his appointment, he served as the Founding Director of the Clinical Study Centre at Charité and the Berlin Institute of Health. In his role as Director, Prof. von Kalle is responsible for guiding the strategic development of the LRC, with a focus on strengthening the integration of research and clinical care, expanding national and international partnerships, and advancing clinical research in key areas such as oncology, neurodegenerative diseases, and immune-mediated conditions. Under his leadership, the LRC aims to further enhance Luxembourg’s capacity for high-quality, patient-oriented translational research.
An external Advisory Committee composed of independent scientific experts may also be established to provide strategic and scientific guidance.
