Despite strong foundations, several challenges persist. Preventive care intensity diminishes with age, and health outcomes are not consistently monitored over time. The prevalence of overweight, obesity, and unhealthy behaviours is increasing. In addition, social and economic determinants continue to influence children’s physical and mental health outcomes.

Additionally, rare diseases pose a significant health challenge in Luxembourg and worldwide. While each condition is uncommon, together they affect many people. There are 8000 different rare diseases known today, many of which begin in childhood and require complex, long-term care. In Luxembourg alone, it is estimated that 30,000 people live with a rare disease. Delays in diagnosis highlight the need for better-coordinated, research‑based approaches.

At the Luxembourg Research Clinic (LRC), healthcare professionals and researchers work together to improve paediatric care. LRC initiatives look at the experiences of families and healthcare professionals. This helps design diagnostic programmes that are more integrated and centred on patients’ needs.

The LRC links research and clinical practice to improve screening, diagnosis, and coordinated care, with the goal of enhancing the quality of life for children with common and rare conditions.
