The National Centre of Excellence in Research on Parkinson’s Disease

The National Centre of Excellence in Research on Parkinson’s Disease (NCER-PD) is a long-term research programme dedicated to improving the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of Parkinson’s disease and related neurodegenerative disorders. Established as Luxembourg’s first Centre of Excellence funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR), NCER-PD brings together clinicians, researchers, and healthcare professionals from multiple institutions to advance research and care neurodegenerative diseases. Over the past years, and since its launch in 2015, NCER-PD has built one of the most comprehensive Parkinson’s disease research infrastructures in Europe. The programme has established large cohorts of people living with Parkinson’s disease, individuals at increased risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases, and healthy volunteers. Through detailed clinical assessments, biological sample collection, genetic analyses, and advanced data technologies, researchers aim to better understand how Parkinson’s disease develops and progresses. The programme has contributed to the discovery of new biomarkers, the development of innovative research tools, and the implementation of clinical trials in Luxembourg. It has also supported the creation of integrated care and prevention initiatives, including Luxembourg’s ParkinsonNet and pdp, helping to improve care for people living with neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s . Today, NCER-PD Sustainability continues this work by maintaining and expanding the unique research cohorts, biobanks, and clinical research infrastructure established over the past decade. The programme aims to accelerate the development of personalised medicine approaches, support future research studies and clinical trials, and ultimately improve the lives of people affected by Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative conditions.
